What is an implant?
A dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth root, usually made from titanium. They can then act as a foundation for crowns, dentures or bridgework.
The main aim during the placement of any implant is to achieve immediate close contact with the surrounding bone. Over time, further growth of bone onto the implant surface enhance the stability of the implant.
How does the treatment work?
In order to support replacement teeth, the implants have an internal screw thread. This allows a variety of components to be fitted. Once fitted, these components provide the foundation for long-term support of crowns, bridges or dentures.
How long do they last? - for over 40 years, dental implants have offered a way of replacing teeth completely and long-term. They have convincing success rates of 96% after 15 years*. Are there any limitations? - yes, an implant requires a certain amount of bone to hold them in place, just like the roots of teeth. There are occasions when insufficient bone is available and new bone needs to be grafted before an implant is placed.
*But it is essential that excellent oral hygiene is maintained around the implants.
