What are clear aligners?
Clear aligners are a method of straightening teeth using a series of removable, nearly invisible plastic trays. Each tray is slightly different from the last, applying gentle, controlled pressure that moves the teeth gradually into position. The system works without metal brackets or fixed wires, and the trays are removed for eating, drinking, and cleaning your teeth.
Unlike fixed braces, there are no food restrictions and no monthly tightening appointments. Most patients wear each tray for one to two weeks before moving to the next, visiting the practice periodically for progress checks. At Somerhill Smiles, treatment planning uses impressions of your teeth rather than a digital scanner, so the fit is based on a precise physical mould of your own mouth.
Clear aligners suit crowding, spacing, mild to moderate overbites and underbites, and crossbites. More complex cases are possible depending on the degree of movement required. Your dentist will assess your teeth at the consultation and advise whether aligners are the right route for your goals.

Our clear aligner system: Smilelign
Somerhill Smiles offers clear aligner treatment using Smilelign, a UK-based aligner system used by GDC-registered dental professionals. Smilelign aligners are made from a thin, clear thermoplastic material and produced from impressions taken at the practice. The treatment plan maps the full sequence of movements from your current position to the intended result.
Smilelign covers a range of case complexity, from minor front-tooth corrections to fuller cases involving more significant movement. Your dentist will advise at the consultation which course length and aligner sequence fits your case.

Smilelign Full
Covers moderate to more complex cases over a longer treatment period. Suitable for patients with crowding, spacing, or bite issues that require more aligner stages and a longer course.

Smilelign Short
A shorter course designed for mild cases, typically targeting front-tooth crowding or spacing. Achieves a meaningful result in less time and at a lower cost than a full case. Not appropriate for bite correction. Your dentist confirms suitability at the consultation.

Your clear aligner treatment journey
-
Consultation and impressions. Your dentist assesses your teeth, discusses your goals, and takes impressions of your mouth. These are used to produce your custom aligner trays. The process is straightforward and takes place at our Church Road practice.
-
Treatment plan and aligner production. Your aligner sequence is planned based on the impressions. You receive a clear picture of the movements involved and the expected treatment length before committing to treatment. Aligners are produced and arrive at the practice.
-
Wearing your aligners. Each set of trays is worn for one to two weeks for at least 22 hours a day, removed for eating, drinking anything other than water, brushing, and flossing. Progress checks at the practice are typically every six to eight weeks.
Retainers at the end. Once active treatment is complete, retainers hold the teeth in their new position and prevent them from drifting back. This is a step many patients overlook. What to expect with retainers after treatment covers this in full.
