Professional Teeth Whitening at Somerhill Smiles

Somerhill Smiles is a private dental practice on Church Road, Hove, serving patients from Brighton, Hove, and across East Sussex. We offer professional teeth whitening that is prescribed, supervised, and carried out by qualified, GDC-registered dentists.

That distinction matters. In the UK, only a registered dental professional can legally supply or administer the prescription-strength whitening gels that produce meaningful results.

Whitening treatments sold through beauty salons, online retailers, or social media are not legally permitted to use the same concentrations, which is why the results are inconsistent and why, in some cases, unregulated treatment causes gum damage or uneven bleaching.

At Somerhill Smiles, whitening starts with an assessment of your teeth and gums. Your dentist selects the right approach, fits your trays from a mold of your teeth, and sets realistic expectations from the start.

Why Choose Dentist-led Whitening?

Safe and regulated. Only a GDC-registered dental professional can legally whiten teeth in the UK using prescription-strength gels. Clinician oversight means the treatment is appropriate for your teeth and gums before it starts.

Custom-fitted for your teeth. Your trays are made from an impression of your own mouth, which keeps the gel precisely where it should be and prevents it from irritating your gum tissue.

✓ Better results that last longer. Professional-grade whitening gels work at concentrations that over-the-counter products cannot legally match. The improvement is more significant and holds for longer with basic maintenance.

✓ Linked to your overall dental care. Your whitening treatment at Somerhill Smiles sits alongside your check-ups and hygiene appointments, so your dentist knows your teeth and can flag anything that needs attention before treatment begins.

Our Whitening Options

Take-home whitening trays

Custom trays made from impressions of your teeth, paired with professional-strength whitening gel. You wear them at home for a set period each day, over a course of around two weeks. The trays fit precisely so the gel covers your teeth evenly and stays away from the gum tissue. Popular with patients who prefer to whiten gradually at their own pace, and the trays can be reused for top-ups with a new supply of gel.

In-practice whitening

A single appointment at our Church Road practice. The gel is applied directly under your dentist's supervision, and a light or activating device may be used to enhance the process. Produces a noticeable result in around an hour. The right choice if you are working to a specific date, such as a wedding, event, or occasion, where you want a quick and visible improvement.

Combination whitening

An in-practice session followed by a take-home tray course to maintain and extend the result. Patients who want the maximum improvement and the longest-lasting outcome tend to find this approach works best. Your dentist will advise what suits your teeth and your goals at the consultation.

What to Expect: Your Whitening Journey

Most whitening treatments at Somerhill Smiles follow a straightforward path from consultation to result.

  • Consultation and assessment. Your dentist checks your teeth and gums, confirms suitability, and addresses anything that needs resolving first.

  • Impressions. Custom trays are made from a mould of your teeth and prepared in a dental laboratory.

  • Tray fitting or in-practice treatment. Your dentist explains exactly how to use the gel, for how long, and what to expect.

  • Results and aftercare. Your dentist advises on what to avoid to protect the result and slow re-staining.

Some patients notice sensitivity to hot or cold during a whitening course. This is common and settles within a day or two of completing treatment. If you already have sensitive teeth, tell your dentist at the consultation. There are adjustments to gel strength and wear time that make the process more comfortable.

Is teeth whitening right for you?

Professional whitening suits most adults with healthy teeth and gums. A few things are worth knowing before you book.

  • Existing restorations. Whitening gel works on natural enamel only. It cannot change the colour of porcelain crowns, veneers, or composite bonding. If you have visible restorations on your front teeth, your dentist will discuss this at the consultation so your expectations are accurate.

  • Gum health. Active gum disease needs to be treated before whitening begins. Your dentist checks this at the assessment.

  • Sensitivity. If you have existing sensitivity, whitening is still possible in most cases. Your dentist adjusts the gel strength and wear time to suit your tolerance.

If you are unsure whether whitening is appropriate for your teeth, the consultation is the right place to find out. You can also explore our full range of private dentistry services if you are considering other cosmetic options alongside whitening.
