Independently regulated

Why whiten with a dentist rather than a kit?

Teeth whitening is a regulated dental procedure in the UK. Only a GDC-registered dentist can legally supply or administer the prescription-strength gels that produce a meaningful, lasting result. Strips, trays, and kits sold online or through beauty salons are limited by law to concentrations too low to make a significant difference. Some unregulated products also cause gum damage or uneven bleaching.

At Somerhill Smiles, whitening starts with a clinical assessment. Your dentist checks your teeth and gums before treatment begins, custom-fits your trays from an impression of your own mouth, and prescribes the right gel strength for your starting shade. The result is safer, more even, and more effective than anything available over the counter.

Keeping up with regular hygiene appointments alongside whitening also makes the result last longer, as clean teeth take the gel more evenly and resist re-staining better.

Take-home whitening trays

Custom trays made from impressions of your teeth, worn at home with a professional-strength gel over a course of around two weeks.

The trays fit precisely so the gel covers your teeth evenly and stays clear of the gum tissue. Most popular with patients who prefer to whiten gradually at their own pace, and the trays can be reused for future top-ups with a new supply of gel.

In-practice whitening

Carried out in a single appointment at our Church Road practice. The gel is applied directly by your dentist, and a light or activating device may be used to enhance the result.

Produces a visible improvement in around an hour. The right choice for patients working to a specific date such as a wedding or event.

Combination whitening

An in-practice session to create an immediate lift, followed by a take-home tray course to maintain and extend the result. Patients looking for the most significant and longest-lasting improvement tend to get the best outcome from this approach.

Whitening starts from £400 for take-home trays and £850 for in-practice treatment. For full fee information, see the plans and fees page. Plan members receive 20% off all whitening treatment.

What to expect at your whitening appointment

  • Consultation and suitability check. Your dentist reviews your teeth and gums and confirms that whitening is appropriate. Any decay or gum issues are addressed before treatment begins.

  • Impressions. Custom trays are made from a mould of your teeth and prepared in a dental laboratory, ready for collection at your next visit.

  • Tray fitting or in-practice session. Your dentist fits your trays, explains exactly how to use the gel and for how long, or carries out the in-practice session directly.

  • Aftercare guidance. You leave with clear advice on what to eat, drink, and avoid while whitening, and how to maintain the result once the course is complete.

Some patients notice sensitivity to hot or cold during a whitening course. This is common and settles within a day or two of finishing. If you already have sensitive teeth, tell your dentist at the consultation. Gel strength and wear time can be adjusted to suit you.
